Getting on and off the island

Access is by the Park Street, High Street and Fruitvale bridges, and by the Posey and Webster Street tubes. The tubes carry vehicle height restrictions, so a box truck has to be routed deliberately rather than sent by whatever a phone suggests, and the bridges lift for marine traffic.

Victorian, Queen Anne and Edwardian stock

Alameda has one of the larger concentrations of intact Victorian and Edwardian housing in the Bay Area, particularly through the East End and the Gold Coast. Many of these houses have never been substantially reworked inside.

What that means for the work: tall rooms, original built-in cabinetry, full basements, floored attics, and detached garages at the back of a long lot reached by a narrow driveway. Staircases are steep and turns are tight, which matters for anything large going out.

Bay Farm Island and the West End are largely later construction and behave differently, with easier access and less storage volume.

Common questions

Does being on the island cost extra?

The commission does not change. Access and volume affect the cleanout cost, and a long carry from a rear garage down a narrow driveway is more labor than a garage on the street.

Can you handle the original built-ins and large furniture?

Yes. Large pieces out of a Victorian need planning for the stairs and the doorways, and that gets worked out before pickup day rather than on it.

What happens to what does not sell?
